Task 1

TASK 1: analyze the following texts and identify:

deictic expressions in the texts, and group them based on their categories. Explain each expression by QUOTING relevant parts of the original text.

OPERATION GRANGER

Detectives investigating a series of serious indecent assaults in Havant and Hayling Island know that at least two were carried out by the same man.

And the methods used in the other incidents- between December 1999 and July 2000- suggest that he could also have been responsible for at least three others.

A major inquiry team has been set up to investigate the assaults, and DNA evidence has shown there is a positive link between two of the attacks – on a 51-year- old woman between Havant and Emsworth and on a 13- year- old girl in a Hayling Island church yard.

Detectives are especially keen to find the perpetrator before he strikes again because his attacks are becoming progressively more violent and showing signs of more planning.

In the most recent attack – on Friday, July 7, 2000, at 7.50pm – a 15- year- old girl was cycling home north along the disused Hayling Billy railway line, now a public footpath. As she reached West Lane she heard someone on the path behind her. Thinking it was a jogger or walker she made way for them to pass, but instead she was grabbed from behind by a man.

The attacker threatened to kill her if she struggled and tried to drag her into the bushes at the side of the footpath. But the girl managed to fight her way free and screamed for help, frightening the man off.

The terrified girl was then able to cycle to a petrol station and phoned the police. She has been able to describe the man who attacked her as white, clean shaven, 5ft  7ins tall, short grey to fair hair, physically weak, wearing a black woolen  hat, long sleeved, dark colored top and jogging bottoms, and gloves. She has also helped detectives piece together a CD-fit image of the attacker.

This attack bears all the hallmarks of at least four other incidents since December 1999 – and another reported prowler incident could also have been the work of this man. Based on the victims’ statements, the composite description of the man responsible for their ordeals is that he is: aged 35 to 55 years, 5ft 5 in to 5ft 8in tall, slim to slight build, described by all the victims as physically weak, reasonably deep voice, smelled very strongly of cigarettes, and in four out of the five attacks he wore gloves.

In the May attack, -the only one in daylight – he wore a dark blue sweatshirt or, possibly a blue jacket with side pockets, and pale blue or possibly white trousers or jeans. Police officers want to hear from anyone who recognizes  the description.

  6. Alright, please allow me to start the discussion.

I'd like to analyze the deixis employed by the writer in the discourse.
I think several deixis appeared on the first until the third sentence are as follows.

    The First Sentence :
"Detectives" investigating a series of serious indecent assaults in Havant and Hayling Island know "that" at least two were carried out by the same man.

-> "Detectives" is a deixis expression which belongs to personal deixis. It is the third person deixis. The third person deixis is all other entities outside the deictic center. It refers to the participant role or a referent.

This first sentence shows the context in which detectives found out that at least two of the assaults were executed by the same man. Detectives means a team that was responsible for the investigation of a series of serious indecent assaults in Havant and Hayling Island.

-> "that" is a deixis expression which belongs to discourse deixis. It refers to the element on the following discourse which is "at least two were carried out by the same man".

    The Second Sentece:
And the methods used in the other incidents between December 1999 and July 2000 suggest "that" "he" could also have been responsible for at least three others.

-> "He" is third person deixis. It refers to “the same man” stated in the previous sentence

Detectives investigating a series of serious indecent assaults in Havant and Hayling Island know that at least two were carried out by "the same man".

-> "that" is a deixis expression which belongs to discourse deixis. It refers to the element of the following discourse which is "he could also have been responsible for at least three others".

    The Third Sentece :
A major inquiry team has been set up to investigate the assaults, and DNA evidence has shown their is a positive link between two of the attacks – on a 51-year- old woman between Havant and Emsworth and on a 13- year- old girl in a Hayling Island church yard.

-> "A major inquiry team" is third person deixis. It refers to a special team that is arranged to investigate the assaults.

  7. Wow great, your explanation give me many knowledges, thanks my beloved Suri Aisyah πŸ₯°πŸŒ»✨🌹

    BalasHapus
  8. I really agree with Suri, all the deixis from first sentence till third sentence that has been mentioned by Suri are complete, even with very detailed explanations.

    BalasHapus
  9. Well, I will continue to analyze the deixis employed, below is the text :

“ Detectives are especially keen to find the perpetrator before he strikes again because his attacks are becoming progressively more violent and signs of more planning. In the most recent attack – on Friday, July 7, 2000, at 7.50pm – a 15- year- old girl was cycling home north along the disused Hayling Billy railway line, now a public footpath. As she reached West Lane she heard someone on the path behind her. Thinking it was a jogger or walker she made way for them to pass, but instead she was grabbed from behind by a man.”

From the text above I have found several Deixis, namely :
In the first sentence there is “he” as Person Deixis. Then in the second sentence there is Temporal Deixis “now” . There are three Person Deixis in the third sentence “she” “she” and “her”. Also in the last sentence there are some Person Deixis “she”and “she”.

  10. Okay let's continue our discussion. There are several deixis that i found in the text :
"The attacker" threatened to kill "her" if she struggled and tried to drag "her" into the bushes at the side of "the footpath". But the "girl" managed to fight "her" way free and screamed for help, frightening the "man" off.
    Result:
"The attacker" (is first person dexies . It refers to the first subject)
    "her"(third person deixis)
"she"( third person deixis that refers to the same woman in previous)
her (third person deixis seems like she that refers to the same woman)
    the girl (first person deixis)
    her (third person deixis)
    the man (first person deixis)

    1. wow, i 100% agree with your explanation! thanks, Orela πŸ€—

    2. I totally agree sistttt ❤πŸ‘‰πŸ‘ˆ

    4. Thanks a lot for your findings, Orela. It's really clear and understandable.

  11. i found several deixis in sixth part, but first i'll let you to read the sentences below :
The terrified girl was then able to cycle to a petrol station and phoned the police. She has been able to describe the man who attacked her as white, clean shaven, 5ft 7ins tall, short grey to fair hair, physically weak, wearing a black woolen hat, long sleeved, dark colored top and jogging bottoms, and gloves. She has also helped detectives piece together a CD-fit image of the attacker.
in first sentences, it has 2 deixis, first third person deixis, as u can read in the sentences "the terrified girl" that girl can be considered as "it", second is temporal deixis that is "then". in the second sentences it has third person deixis because it uses "she" and "the man" that considered as "it" , same with second setences, in the third sentences also uses third person deixis, that is "she" , "detectives" that considered as "they" and "detecker" that considered as "it" . CMIIW guys and thank you!

    5th paragraph.
"This" (Spatial Deixis) attack bears all the hallmarks of at least four other incidents since December 1999 – and another reported prowler incident could also have been the work of "this" (Spatial Deixis) man. Based on the victims’ statements, the composite description of the man responsible for "their" (person deixis) ordeals is that "he" (person deixis) is: aged 35 to 55 years, 5ft 5 in to 5ft 8in tall, slim to slight build, described by all the victims as physically weak, reasonably deep voice, smelled very strongly of cigarettes, and in four out of the five attacks "he" (person deixis) wore gloves.

I also found several deixis in the 5th paragraph. In the first sentence there are 2 spatial deixis and in the second sentence there are 3 person deixis. Thankyou everybodyπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘
