TASK 2: This task is to be Done and discussed in Group BLOGs. After discussing the discussion questions, each group has to submit a written report, summarizing the results of the group discussions (approximately 3-4 A-4 paper size page long).
1. What is the object of pragmatics studies?
2. What is the definition of context in pragmatics studies?
3. How important is context in understanding meanings?/ or
meaning makings?
4. What types of context are most relevant in pragmatics
studies?
5. What is the relationship between ‘forms’ and ‘functions’ in
general linguistics studies, i.e. Grammar class, and in
pragmatics studies?
Notes:
Always provide examples of relevant language expressions in discussing and responding to each question.
Read the coursebooks attached to help you understand terms and concepts found in the qs 1 to 5.
Report is due at 10.00 a.m. on or by Monday, 3 May 2021.
Good Luck, guys.
Hello guys! We are going to replay our discussion in task 2! Prepare urself by ur best argument!❤
BalasHapusOkay guys let's start with the first question!
BalasHapusOke, I will try answer the first!
BalasHapus1. What is the object of pragmatics studies?
Answer: the object of pragmatics studies is at the level of discourse, either conversation or other forms that are interactive or non-interactive. In addition, Pragmatics focuses its attention on communicative meanings, namely what the speakers / writers want to imply in the context. Therefore, discourses that contain implicit elements, such as advertising discourse, political discourse, or humorous discourse, provide a lot of inspiration for pragmatic-based studies.
I think enough for me, pls correct me guys 😘
Alright.. how about discourse analysis ferdha?? Is discourse analysis also included in pragmatics?
HapusThanks a lot for the clear explanation, Ferdha. Now I see that the object of pragmatics studies is at the level of discourse.
HapusOhh, i see, Ferdha. Thank you.
Hapusokay thanks for Anggi's question, I will try to answer, pragmatic and discourse are 2 different components,
HapusIf semantics examines informative meaning, pragmatics focuses its attention on communicative meaning, namely what the speakers / writers want to imply in the context. so the answer is no.
Okay ferdha, it means that pragmatics are focusing on meaning?
HapusThanks ferdha
HapusAlright .. let me move on to the next number🙏
BalasHapus2. What is the definition of context in pragmatics studies?
Answer:
Context is about understanding what something is for. Context also provides true pragmatic meaning and allows true pragmatic meaning to become actual pragmatic acts. Then, it can be said that the context is a conceptual framework about everything that is used as a reference in speak or understand the meaning of speech. The framework referred to here is a set of roles and relationships that are part of the formation mean. Conceptual means that it is in the human mind and made as an understanding of the results of thought, experience, or the result of the perception of human senses.
Example:
(1) I went to Beijing last month. The Forbiden City was magnificient.
(2)? I went to Paris last month. The Forbiden City was magnificient.
Speech (1) is pragmatically rated as good, while (2) is considered anomalous. Based on one's world knowledge it is known that a forbidden city exists in Beijing, but there are no tourist shows in Paris. This general knowledge context by Stanlaker (Yuang, 2007: 14) is called the common ground. General knowledge context is also known as background, general meaning, knowledge encyclopedia, and real-world knowledge context.
Thank you anggi it's understandable.
Hapusthank you for answering that question, Anggi.
HapusThanks a lot, Anggi. It's very clear and also supported by examples. Great! ><
HapusThanks, very clear
HapusThat's all from me. Thank u....
BalasHapus3. How important is context in understanding meanings?/ or meaning makings?
BalasHapusContext is the background, environment, setting, framework, or surroundings of events or occurrences. Simply, context means circumstances forming a background of an event, idea or statement, in such a way as to enable readers to understand the narrative or a literary piece.
A context is important to pragmatics: because Pragmatics takes context into account to complement the contributions that semantics and grammar make to meaning, he says.
Context is important in understanding meanings because:
Context provides meaning and clarity to the intended message. Context clues in a literary work create a relationship between the writer and reader, giving a deeper understanding of the intent and direction of the writing.
contribution context to the meaning: context shapes their attempt to constructmeaning as they read. Physical context can enhance or diminish their ability to read the document. Culturalcontext will affect the fundamental assumptions, beliefs, and aspirations that they bring to the reading of a text.
Context also important to the communication:
Context is critical, because it tells you, the receiver, what importance to place on something, what assumptions to draw (or not) about what is being communicated, and most importantly, it puts meaning into the message. The hardest thing about communicating effectively is knowing how to “set the context”.
An example of contextual is how the word "read" can have two different meaningsdepending upon what words are around it. adjective. 27. 5. Of, pertaining to, or depending on the context of information; relating to the situation or location in which the information was found. Another example is the word "Take". A word can mean something different when it occures in various sentence: 1. Take a bath vs Take me i'm yours! Has the different meaning.
In conclusion: context is affecting the meaning of word and the way understand it. The reader have to analyze it clearly to make sure that meaning of word are appropriate with the context.
thank you, Orela. I just known the importance of context in understanding a meaning
HapusYapsss, same like Shinta said above,, thanks orela
Hapusi'll answer the question number 4 "What types of context are most relevant in pragmatics studies?"
BalasHapusthere are two types of context in pragmatics : physical context (such as where a sign is located) and linguistic context (such as preceding sentences in a passage). Both of them is important, but the most important is linguistic context, Linguistic context can be explored from three aspects: deictic, co-text, and collocation.
In a language event, the participants must know where they are in space and time, and these features relate directly to the deictic context, by which we refer to the deictic expressions like the time expressions now, then, etc., the spatial expressions here, there, etc., and the person expressions I, you, etc... Deictic expressions help to establish deictic roles which derive from the fact that in normal language behavior the speaker addresses his utterance to another person and may refer to himself, to a certain place, or to a time.
Thank you shinta its too clear🥰

BalasHapusGood job Orela and Shinta.. that's awesome 👍👍👍
BalasHapusThanks Shinta very clear
HapusI am going to answer question number 5 part A, the question is :
BalasHapus5. What is the relationship between Forms and fuctions in :
a) general linguistics studies for example Grammar class
Answer : Grammatical Forms is concerned with the description of linguistic units in terms of what they are and Grammatical Function is concerned with the description of what these linguistic units do. The relationship between Forms and Fuctions in Grammar is the form of something is its structure or anatomy. The function is what it does. A body part’s function depends on its form.
Okay friends, we come to the end of our discussion ><
BalasHapusI’d like to answer question 5 about the relation between form and function in pragmatics.
Well, in short we could say that the form determines the function of an utterance.
Here is the thing, in pragmatics studies, people have certain reasons in choosing the forms both grammatical and lexical forms. It depends on the function of the utterance. That is to say, every grammatical form conveyed by a speaker/writer can’t be said to be wrong or right. Meanwhile, the form must have its own function intended by the speaker.
For example, a speaker may express a speech with code mixing in a conversation. It may because he wants to reduce the social distance between himself and the hearer.
Thank you very much surii
Hapusthank you for answering question number 5 Genda and Suri. It really helps me to get more knowledge, thankyou! XoXo.
